About Cara

Cara Achterberg photo by Nancy SlatteryHi! I’m Cara Sue Achterberg, but you can call me Cara. I’m a blogger, creative writing teacher, and novelist. I live in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia (Woodstock to be exact) with my husband, three rescue dogs, and a changing cast of foster dogs (and cats!).

My book, Another Good Dog: One Family and Fifty Foster Dogs includes many of the dogs you find her on this blog and was published by Pegasus Books in August 2018. My latest book, One Hundred Dogs & Counting: One Woman, Ten Thousand Miles, and a Journey Into the Heart of Shelters and Rescues was also published by Pegasus in summer 2020.

I’m the author of four novels: Blind Turn (2021), Praticing Normal (2017), Girls’ Weekend (2016), and I’m Not Her (2015). Look for them wherever books are sold.

My book Live Intentionally: 65 Challenges for a Healthier Happier Life is about living a life on purpose in terms of the decisions you make about what you eat, how you spend your time, and how you care for your family and the earth. I promise it’s not preachy. It’s full of stories, recipes, ideas, and hopefully plenty of inspiration to help you start living the life you want to live.

You can find out all about my books and blogs at CaraWrites.com. Or find the links to everything I’m up to and all my social connections on my Linktree.

When I’m not writing or chasing foster dogs, I can be found in my gardens, visiting wineries, or hiking through the woods or up the mountains. I love visiting book clubs and other groups and welcome opportunities to speak and teach about writing, organic lifestyle, and/or fostering dogs.

I would LOVE to hear from you. Use the form below to give me a shout.
